I am glad that you are exploring our website.
I hope you get a sense of what makes Miquon special. I believe it is how we combine Progressive Education with the honoring of childhood and a direct experience of the natural world. If you want to know more, please visit our campus - in sturdy walking shoes - and get a first hand impression of active learning, a deep appreciation of children's work, and our expert attention to the education, development, and health of the whole child.
At Miquon, we work steadily to harness children's natural curiosity while providing them the research tools and the confidence to obtain meaningful answers to their questions. There is no better place to do this than in a classroom where the woods and a creek are just outside the door, and where every teacher is committed to helping children reach their potential. At this school, students are prepared for their future as adults without losing their childhood. It is a balance that is hard to find today, and one that is more critical than ever.
We have been closely observing young children for more than 75 years, building our practices on current research - physical, social, psychological, and educational. Now we are at the cutting edge of a dramatically changing landscape.
I recently attended a conference on technology where the speaker warned the audience of school administrators to adapt (quickly) to our rapidly changing world - or risk preparing children for the 21st Century with inadequate 20th Century skills. He talked of the necessity of critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills for the next generation who will live in a "flat" world. Because information is so widely available now - indeed, we are overwhelmed by it - learning how to think is the most important skill we can offer a child. By the time he mentioned "creativity training" I had already listed in my head how many different ways we ask children at Miquon to combine disciplines and express themselves and their knowledge in numerous different media and contexts. I was perfectly satisfied that Miquon's progressive philosophy and practice is more salient than ever before.
Yours,
Julia
