Miquon’s diverse families

Miquon is a community into which families, not only children, are welcomed. It is our view that education is a cooperative venture amongst all the adults in a child's life.

Embedded in our mission and philosophy is the belief that a strong school community includes a rich mix of individuals who contribute a variety of talents, experience, and opinions to the learning process. We are proud of the progress that has been made over the years to include such parents, children, and staff in our school. We continue our efforts to reach out to families and staff from different economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. We welcome the diversity of personalities, perspectives, and learning styles that their children bring into our classrooms.

Miquon has an active Diversity Committee including members of staff, parents, and the principal. It supports the school in raising awareness and facilitating conversation about issues of inclusion. It brings guest performers, artists, and speakers, and generates programs that celebrate the existing diversity within the school community. A teacher serves as Multicultural Resource person for Miquon staff to provide liaison with the Committee, as well as facilitating support and resources to teachers in social and curricular areas.

Some measures of diversity in 2009-2010:

Geographic
141 Miquon students come from 110 different families. These families reside in nearly 40 zip codes, representing neighborhoods on both sides of the Schuylkill River, from Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Norristown and Elkins Park, to Fairmount, West Philadelphia and Overbrook. More than half our families are clustered in the neighborhoods of Conshohocken, Roxborough, Germantown, East and West Mount Airy, Wyndmoor, and Chestnut Hill.

Economic
42 students, or 33% of the eligible student body, receive assistance with tuition in the form of need-based financial aid. Their awards range from 10-90% of tuition.

Racial and ethnic
48 (34%) of Miquon's students are children of color. Of those children, nearly two-thirds are from mixed-race families, and more than one-fourth of them are African-American. The remainder are of Hispanic or Asian-American descent. Many different countries of origin are represented amongst the school's families.

Religion
Miquon is a non-sectarian school in which families of different religious affiliations, or none, are present and welcome. School is not closed for religious holidays, but it is understood that some families will choose to have their children miss school for religious observance.

Family structure
Miquon students come from a wide variety of family constellations, including nuclear and blended families, two-household families, single-parent families, adoptive families, and families with gay or lesbian parents. Our administrative materials, classroom resources, and daily conversations reflect and normalize this diversity in our community.
