What is Progressive Education?
Progressive education begins with a simple but powerful idea: start with the child. Rather than treating learning as the efficient transmission of information, Progressive schools center curiosity, development, and meaningful engagement. At Miquon, an independent Progressive elementary school serving families in the Philadelphia region, our child-centered, inquiry-based approach meets each student where they are and invites them to become active participants in their own learning.
Miquon teachers support children in asking questions, exploring deeply, and following their interests toward new discoveries. Our curriculum grows from the identities, concerns, and ideas students bring with them each day. When learning is connected to real questions, children develop both academic skills and a strong sense of agency.
Recently, our kindergartners became concerned about fish in a nearby frozen pond on our wooded Montgomery County campus. Their questions led to research about winter conditions and aquatic life. What began as curiosity grew into action.
Students wrote letters, created drawings, and shared presentations with the community explaining why the ice should remain undisturbed. This is Progressive education in practice: curiosity leading to investigation, and investigation leading to meaningful action.
Learning That Is Real and Relevant
A second core principle of Progressive education is that learning must feel authentic. Children engage most deeply when their work has visible purpose and real-world application.
At Miquon, fifth and sixth graders manage a biweekly pizza lunch program. Students set menus and prices, process orders, and handle accounting. Through this experience they apply math skills, including fractions and financial reasoning, in a context that truly matters to them.
The accuracy of their work directly affects outcomes, from balancing the budget to making sure every younger student receives the correct order.
Experiences like these help children understand the relationship between effort, feedback, and results. When students see that their work has real impact, they are more motivated to persist through challenges and take on increasingly complex problems.
This sense of purpose is a powerful driver of lifelong learning.
The Role of the Progressive Teacher
