University of Pennsylvania African-American Resource Center (AARC)

Each year, during the month of January, the University of Pennsylvania and our surrounding communities come together to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The commemoration reminds us of our interdependence and reaffirms our commitment to the betterment of our communities through civility and service.

The Day of Service is scheduled for – Monday, January 21, 2019 so come out and participate in:

8:30 am – 10:00 am
Day of Service Breakfast

10:00 am – 12:30 pm
Children’s Banner Painting (adult supervision required)

10:00 am – 12:30 pm
A Pocketful of Toiletries

Constructing a bag that will be filled with personal items specifically geared toward women

10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Helping Hands

Creating gifts that will be donated to West Philadelphia area shelters

Woodmere Art Museum

Children and families will be inspired by the words of activism of Dr. King and the work of many who fought for freedom and civil rights. Join us for art making, storytelling, music, and performances.

Philly Children’s Movement

The Philly Children’s Movement invites children and families to draw inspiration from Dr. King’s activism. Children will be invited to create posters and capes to be superheroes battling injustice.The Philly Children’s Movement is a network of families talking, playing, and rising up together for racial justice.

Noon-2:30 pm
Artmaking and Storytelling

Listen to stories about Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Harriet Tubman, and many others who fought for freedom and civil rights; then create an art project commemorating these American heroes.

2:30 pm
Performance by Nia Eubanks-Dixon

Nia Eubanks-Dixon, from Philly Children’s Movement and Creative Praxis, will be leading an interactive storytelling experience for all ages. Come listen to stories of power, courage, and liberation. The session will explore the power of words by looking at some of Dr. King’s speeches and its profound impact on communities. Nia Eubanks-Dixon infuses movement, music, song, theater, and poetry into every story and invites her audience to come on a journey of love, discovery, and action. Nia is a member of the Steering Group of the Philly Children’s Movement.
