A Note On Native Plants
Native (to eastern Pennsylvania) and “nativar” varieties are noted throughout the online plant sale; “nativar” is a cultivar adapted from a native variety. There is a lot of debate surrounding this topic, but many nativar species can be more conducive to smaller urban gardens where they self sew and reproduce less vigorously, while still providing food and habitat for local wildlife. Add to this debate the effect of climate change, where perennials considered native further south and west of PA are now able to thrive here, and periods of excessive drought or rain and other extremes can induce stress and invite disease.
When considering native plants, also consider why this is important to you and your garden; are you looking to provide food and habitat for local wildlife, or perhaps wanting varieties that are well adapted to our environment and don’t require as much maintenance over time? Know that even native plants benefit from supplemental watering in order to get established, and there are many low-maintenance “non-native” varieties that provide food and habitat. The garden is an incredible teacher of the only true constant: change. Rest assured, the varieties included in this plant sale have been time tested for success, and we do not sell anything invasive!
