Remembering Penny Colgan Davis

Principal at Miquon for nine years, from 1993-2002

Many will fondly remember former principal Penny Colgan-Davis, who sadly passed away on June 19, 2018. Penny served as principal at Miquon for 9 years, from 1993-2002, and was a beloved and much admired figure in the Philadelphia educational community. She worked at Friends Select School and the Russell Byers Charter School, and ended her career as a teacher/administrator as head of the Frankford Friends School before retiring in 2015. Even in retirement, however, she was busy leading volunteers to reopen the library at Kelly Elementary School in Germantown.

At Miquon, we will continue to remember Penny as a dynamic leader who was fully committed to our mission of celebrating childhood — she loved the Halloween parade, and the ways our students were able to be themselves in our classrooms, woods, and the creek. Penny organized several Miquon Institutes on Teaching and Learning, which were workshops with leading Progressive educators that brought independent and public school teachers and administrators together to share ideas and resources.

Penny’s friendship and work enriched all those she met — through her wisdom, kindness, and commitment to children she made an enormous impact on everyone in her orbit. The sympathies and thoughts of the entire Miquon community are with her family.
