Reading Workshop in First Grade

By Kristin Sanderson

From a very early age, children are immersed in language, through play, songs, poetry, interactive read alouds, independent explorations of children’s literature and opportunities to explore writing in meaningful ways. One of the modes of developing literacy highlighted at last night’s event was Reading Workshop, which happens several times a week in the younger grades.  Today in the First Grade, each child enjoyed individual one-on-one instruction time with teachers, developing strategies for learning unfamiliar words, taking “picture walks” through books to predict what might be happening, and thinking critically about the text in hand.
